Passionate Latino youth are working closely with the Cornell Lab to research, write, and narrate public service announcements on the radio about the Celebrate Urban Birds focal species! Several Kaytee Avian Foundation Remote Interns have already finished their projects in Syracuse, NY. They are part of a fantastic youth theater group called “La Joven Guardia del Teatro Latino”, under the supervision of their inspiring mentor, José Miguel Hernández Hurtado at La LIGA. These remarkable students share a common passion for the wonders of acting and a commitment for giving back to their communities. They learned about birds for the first time in detail, and shared their new knowledge with their community though short radio messages.
At the onset of their internships youth selected one of the Celebrate Urban Birds focal species through a fun raffle. Youth worked closely in a team (comprised of their mentor, family members, friends of their theater group, and Celebrate Urban Birds staff) for approximately one month. They all actively exchanged information, fun facts, videos, photos and much more through a Facebook group, emails, and in meetings.
They each learned a lot about their bird and chose an interesting fact about it to share with their community through a short bilingual message, in English and Spanish, transmitted on the radio show “Sabor Latino”, at 620AM, in Syracuse, NY. After recording the messages, the students were so happy and proud! It was their “gift” to their community! For Cornell Lab staff it was inspiring to see their excited faces and listen to their wonderful comments.
We hope their brief messages will serve as an inspiration to other youth and people of all ages in their community. We know that through their work, they are promoting the appreciation of birds and nature in their urban neighborhood.
