Description

This poem is about a sparrow nest observed over a period of at least three years. I first noticed the nest when the tree was fully leafed, and a sparrow flew into the leaves with something in her mouth. Getting closer, I heard the chirps of little babies. In subsequent years, I kept watch, but the nest was never occupied again. Perhaps the sparrow found the car wash and the busy street too dangerous for baby birds. As the tree grew older and lost much of its growth, the little nest continued to maintain its perch.

Poem: Birdcraft

Birdcraft

After three years
veneered
in winter ice
and assailed
by twice as many
summer squalls,
the scraggy
little sparrow nest
still clings
to the tipsy
little ash tree
near the car wash 
a token of avian
achievement
touchable
on tiptoes.
